This is one of the most commonly used expressions in everyday Japanese:

MOTTAI NAI (もったいない) — “What a waste!”

In this lesson, I explain what “Mottai nai” really means, where the expression comes from, and how Japanese speakers naturally use it in conversation.

I also explain how the feeling changes when you add endings like yo, ne, yone, na, and jyan.
